of seeing our favorite athletes win an award. I can't wait until
tomorrow so I decided to do my own. I'm not going to cover every
category, just some of the most popular ones. The people I am picking
are overlooked athletes that aren't favorites to win but should win.
Best Male Athlete- Lionel Messi
Messi probably won't win this award and he's probably not even a nominee
but he should. According to several sports writers Lebron James, Novak
Djokovic, Justin Verlander, and Aaron Rodgers are the favorites for this
award. Yes those guys have had great years, but Lio Messi scored 72
goals this past season. Most elite strikers in the world dream about
scoring 30 or 40 goals. Let me put it in perspective, that's like
Rodgers throwing 60 TD's or Lebron averaging 40 points per game.
Best Female Athlete- Vivian Cheruiyot
99% of people that read this have probably never heard of Vivian
Cheruiyot and don't care who she is. Well, let me give you a brief
summary of who she is and her achievements. Vivian is a Kenyan distance
runner that won the 5k and 10k races at the IAAF World Championships
last September to go along with her World Cross Country victory later
that fall. Another impressive stat about her is that she has not lost a
single race in any event since January 2011. Because running is not
interesting to most people, Vivian's dominance will be overlooked and
Serena Williams will probably win this award for her performance at
Wimbledon.
Best Breakthrough Athlete- Victor Cruz
I hate the New York Giants but even I can't deny that their receiver
Victor Cruz had a monster year. The young man from UMass Amherst burst
onto the scene last season and became one of the NFL's elite receivers.
Best Male College Athlete- Justin Blackmon
I know you were all expecting Robert Griffin III or Anthony Davis. Well
one of those guys probably will win the award but let's not forget about
Oklahoma State's superstar receiver Justin Blackmon. Opposing teams
designed their defenses to stop Blackmon from beating them but he still
managed to catch 18 td's last year to go with his mind blowing 121
catches. He went on to lead Ok State in their fiesta bowl victory
against Stanford with 8 catches and 3 td's.
Best Female College Athlete- Kimberlyn Duncan
Like Vivian Cheruiyot, Kimberlyn Duncan is not known to many people.
Also like Vivian, Kimberlyn is a runner who dominated her competition
this past year. Once again like Vivian, Duncan never lost a race this
past year winning SEC and NCAA titles in multiple track & field events
including the 60m, 100m, 200m, and 4x1 relay. Unfortunately for Duncan
her sport is not very popular therefore Baylor's basketball phenom
Britney Griner will most likely win this award.
Best Team- Baylor Women's Basketball
Let's be honest Kentucky Men's basketball is probably going to win this
and I want them to win this but.....the Baylor Lady Bears achieved one
thing the Wildcats of Kentucky didn't, an undefeated season. Kentucky's
one loss to Indiana is pretty insignificant but it's still a loss.
Baylor on the other hand never tasted defeat this past season, and
absolutely ran through pretty every opponent.
